CSS Neuse II – Kinston, NC

At the corner of Gordon and Heritage Streets in downtown Kinston lies something extraordinary.

“It’s the only full-scale replica of an ironclad in the world. We’ve got people from overseas coming to Kinston for a variety of reasons. For some, the reason is to see this ironclad,” said David Mooring, the president of the CSS Neuse Foundation.

The replica is a spitting image of the CSS Neuse, a gunboat used by Confederate troops to defend Kinston during the Civil War.

The Bear Town Bears – New Bern, NC

New Bern, North Carolina is the birthplace of Pepsi and home of the bears, lots and lots of bears. They’ve been a fixture in the city since it was settled.

Bern is the old German word for bear. So, it’s only fitting that New Bern is also known as Bear Town.
